How to connect Inkwell to Recollect

By Jon H2 min readUpdated

Connect your Inkwell account to Recollect to send any note to Inkwell as an entry, either as a draft or published right away. Recollect uploads the note’s images to Inkwell.

What you need

  • An Inkwell account with an Inkwell Plus subscription. Inkwell only lets apps write to Plus accounts.
  • An Inkwell API key with the Write permission.

Create an API key

  1. Sign in to Inkwell.
  2. Go to Settings → API keys.
  3. Create a key named Recollect, and turn on the Write permission. Read is always included.
  4. Copy the key. It starts with ink_ and is only shown once.

Connect Inkwell in Recollect

  1. In Recollect, open Settings and select Integrations.
  2. Under Publish to a site, select Inkwell as the Site type. Inkwell doesn’t need a site address.
  3. Paste your API key.
  4. Select Connect.

Recollect checks the key, confirms that your account can write to Inkwell, and stores the key encrypted. You can connect more than one Inkwell account, and use Test or Disconnect on its card at any time.

Send a note to Inkwell

Open a note, select Send to site at the bottom of the note, choose Inkwell, and select Send. Before you send, you can choose:

  • Status: Draft, which is always selected to start, or Publish. Publishing creates a public entry that your followers see, including people who follow you from other fediverse apps.
  • Category: one of Inkwell’s categories, such as Personal or Tech.

The note’s tags become the entry’s tags, up to 20.

A few things to know:

  • Drafts sent from Recollect open in Inkwell’s HTML mode. Select Back to the visual editor to switch.
  • Images are uploaded to Inkwell, up to 20 per note. Large images are resized to fit Inkwell’s 4 MB limit.
  • Checklists stay checklists. YouTube and Vimeo videos play in the entry; other video and social media links appear as links.
  • Inkwell doesn’t accept file attachments. A file appears as a placeholder line in a draft and is left out of a published entry.
  • When an entry is published, Inkwell links any @username in it to the matching Inkwell user.

For everything Recollect sends, see how to send a note to a site. To move notes to Trash automatically once they’re sent to Inkwell, turn on Move the note to Trash after it’s sent on the Inkwell card in Settings → Integrations.

If connecting doesn’t work

  • “Inkwell rejected that API key”: check that you copied the whole key, or create a new one.
  • “That Inkwell API key is read-only”: create a new key with the Write permission.
  • “Writing to Inkwell through its API needs an Inkwell Plus subscription”: subscribe to Plus, or renew it if it lapsed, then select Test on the Inkwell card.
  • “Inkwell is limiting how often Recollect can write”: Inkwell limits how many changes an app can make in a short time. Wait a few minutes and send the note again.
