How to add a table of contents to a note

By Jon H1 min readUpdated

A table of contents gives a long note an outline of its headings, with links you can click to jump straight to any section. It builds itself from the headings in your note and stays up to date as you edit.

Inserting a table of contents

Add a few headings to your note first, then place your cursor where you want the table of contents to appear. Click Table of Contents in the toolbar Insert dropdown, or type / on an empty line and select Table of Contents. Recollect reads the headings in your note and lists them automatically.

The table of contents includes Heading 1 through Heading 5 and reflects each heading’s level with indentation, so subheadings sit neatly beneath the heading above them.

Jumping to a section

Click any entry in the table of contents to scroll straight to that heading. This works while you’re editing a note and when you’re viewing a shared copy of it.

Keeping it up to date

There’s no list to maintain by hand. As you add, rename, reorder, or remove headings, the table of contents updates on its own to match.

Table of contents options

Open the table of contents’ overflow menu (the … button) to change how it looks:

  • Switch between a bulleted and a numbered list.
  • Exclude a heading level you don’t want listed — for example, hide Heading 4 and Heading 5 to keep the outline focused on your main sections.

Removing a table of contents

Select the table of contents block and delete it. Your headings and their content stay exactly where they are.
