You can save any note as a draft post or page on your own WordPress or EmDash site. Recollect creates the draft in the background, uploads the note’s images to the site’s media library, and adds a link so you can open the draft and publish it on the site. This is separate from sharing a note with a link.
What you need
- WordPress: your WordPress username and an application password. Create one in WordPress under Users → Profile → Application Passwords: enter a name such as Recollect, select Add New Application Password, and copy the password it shows. Your site must use HTTPS. Use an account that can create posts and upload media, such as an Author, Editor, or Administrator.
- EmDash: an API token. A site admin creates it in the EmDash admin under Settings → API Tokens, with the
content:read,content:write,media:write, andschema:readscopes.
Connecting a site
Open Settings, select Integrations, and find Publish to a site. You can connect up to 10 sites.
- Under Site type, select WordPress or EmDash.
- In Site address, enter your site’s home address, such as
https://example.com. - Enter your WordPress Username and Application password, or your EmDash API token.
- Select Connect.
Recollect checks the credentials before it saves the connection, and stores them encrypted. Use Test to check a connection later, or Disconnect to remove it. Drafts already on the site stay there.
Saving a note as a draft
Once a site is connected, a Share to a site button appears at the bottom of every note, between Share note and Export note.
- Open the note and select Share to a site.
- Choose the Site.
- Under Save as, choose Post or Page. Post is the default, and Page appears when the site supports it.
- Optionally choose a Category, and for pages, a Parent page when the site supports one.
- Select Save Draft.
The window closes right away and Recollect saves the draft in the background. A message at the top of the screen shows its progress, then Draft saved to your site with an Open draft link. You can keep working while it saves.
The note’s tags are added as tags on the site when you save a post. Tags that don’t exist on the site yet are created if your account is allowed to; any tag that can’t be added is skipped.
What the draft includes
- The note’s first line becomes the post’s title, and the rest of the note becomes its content.
- Headings, bold, italic, links, lists, quotes, code blocks, tables, and horizontal rules.
- Checklists, as bulleted lists with ☐ and ☑ marks.
- Images, uploaded to the site’s media library with their alt text. The draft uses the uploaded copies.
- YouTube and Vimeo videos, embedded.
- File attachments are listed by name, a table of contents is left out, and links to other Recollect notes become plain text.
Each time you save a note, Recollect creates a new draft; it doesn’t update a draft it created earlier. Publishing, scheduling, and the featured image are all done on your site.
If saving doesn’t work
- “WordPress rejected that username or application password”: check the username and create a new application password.
- “Cloudflare’s bot protection … is blocking Recollect”: see How to let Recollect save drafts to a site that uses Cloudflare.
- A security plugin or firewall on your site can also block Recollect. The Cloudflare article lists the IP addresses Recollect connects from.
